Interview with VK Cherian

The Madras Film society in a nutshell.

1.      The Madras Film Society was formed on 30th October 1957.  It was at
 the laps of American Consulate, MFS took its birth on that day.

2.      Smt. Ammu Swaminadhan, mother of Late advocate general Sri. Govind
 Swaminadhan was the founder president of the Society.

3.      Then it was Sri.Shantilal Mehta, one of the Senior most life members.

4.      Thereafter Justice P R Gokulakrishnan, Smt. Visalakshi Nedunchezhian,
Sri. G Venkateswaran (GV) of Sujatha Films had served our organisation as

5.      Sri Abirami Sv Rm Ramanathan, who was our Vice President for 15 years
 is the present President of our Society.

6.      Then Sri Nalli Kuppuswamy Chettiar has become our Vice President.

7.      Late Sri. D Ramanujam was Vice President of our Society till his

8.      Sri K S Govindaraj who is one of the Founder Members of our Society
is presently the Executive Vice President.

9.      MFS is the oldest film society in the South which is nearing 54th
 year of its existence.

10.  With Rs.12/- as annual subscription it was started and today the
subscription is Rs.700/- per annum.

11.  Many film personalities are benefited by our screening of
international films.

12.  Messrs. K Balachander – Kamalhassan – Singeetham Srinivasa Rao –
Muktha Srinivasan – SP Muthuraman – Balu Mahendra – Suhasini – Nazar – are our regular guests to witness our film shows even today, whenever they are free.

13.  MFS commenced its celebration of Golden Jubilee year in October 2006
 and completed in October 2007 where by it has screened more than 250 films
obtained from all the Embassies and Consulates in India.

14.  Embassies and Consulates of various countries situated in Delhi,
Mumbai and Chennai are the main sources of supply of films.

15.  In celebration of their Golden Jubilee year, MFS held various film
festivals on a basic theme of “a festival, a country, a month”.

16.  Sri. S Mahadevan was our general secretary till recently up to 2010.

17.  Still it is going strong with the blessings of its beloved members.

18.  It is affiliated to the Federation of Film Societies of India (Southern Region).

19.  It is a member in South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, Chennai.

We need your blessings and cooperation to continue from strength to strength to reach new heights in the Film Society movement in India.
